Recently, our breakfast nook got a lot of attention. First, my dad helped me construct a built-in wrap around bench. Then I got to work making cushions and pillows for it. Finally, I completed some framed embroidery for the wall behind it. Let me fill you in on all the details.

Last year, I asked my dad to help me construct a cantilever desk in my office based on this design. I absolutely love it and the design is sleek and makes the small space seem much bigger and more usable. So I thought at similar design would work great in our eat-in kitchen area to replace the bulky rolling chairs. I love it just as much and highly recommend this design for small spaces. Easy to clean and leaves the space feeling open and clean.

I wanted move-able and washable cushions and a big pile of pillows for back support (and for sleeping on sleepy mornings). My mom and I found the cutest kitchen fabric. These pillows are simple and straight-forward. Nothing fancy. I’m still in the process of quilting two other pillows that are a little more elaborate. More on those later.

For the wall, I embroidered a happy camper from a pattern I bought on Etsy and put a matching border on it then added some batting and put it in a thrift store frame (minus the glass).

Then I selected two embroidered tea towels made by each of my grandmothers. I love using them as tea towels, but wanted to see some of them all the time, so I thought I’d frame them. I added some fabric framing, ric-rac, and piping before framing them. I really love how they turned out!

I’m so happy with the space now. It feels bright, cheery, and airy. It’s my favorite spot to sit and have coffee in the morning and get inspired before I start my day. I hope it inspires you too!
